Dear Friends of Nurses

Can you imagine a healthcare system without nurses? I am sure it is hard for you to visualize. Nurses are the lifeline, the driving force and the vanguard of healthcare. They are pioneers behind the passing of the healthcare reform bill. Nurses are advocates, educators and a knowledge bank for their patients. They help to relive fear and anxiety. They soothe the worried soul. According to President Obama, “Nurses are the beating heart of our healthcare system.” While doctors perform the procedures, nurses are the ones that provide the care. Nurses are more than pill pushers they are life savers. With their critical thinking skills, warm hearts and caring touch they provide care every day. Nurses are indispensable unsung heroes.

Nonetheless, despite their valiant contributions, darkness looms over the healthcare system. There is a critical nursing shortage. This shortage so severe it is referred to as a national security concern. Nursing shortage can and will have devastating effect if this problem is not curtail quickly. The current nursing population will be overworked and the ripple effect includes poor patient care, poor job performance and ultimately a strain on the healthcare system.

The Nursing Students’ Association of New York State (NSANYS) future nurse leaders are on a mission to alleviate the nursing shortage. Our goal is to find creative ways to recruit and retain future nurses. Our plans include offering scholarships to new and current nursing students  as well as the minority population and children from the foster system. Additionally, we would like to create a nursing student homework helpline, initiate a Men Can Be Nurses Too program and also a Healthy Children program to eradicate childhood obesity. We will be lobbying congress for more financial help for entry level nursing student. (A list our goals are available upon request).

NSANYS is reaching out to you for your support in promoting the profession of nursing. We cannot tackle this mammoth problem alone. We need your support. Will you be a friend of nurses and assist us in our endeavors to recruit, retain and assist nursing students? With your help and support we can achieve great things. For without nurses there cannot be a healthcare system.
