NOVEMBER IS VETERANS AWARENESS MONTH

Thank you to all the schools who submitted their Community Health Volunteer event following the theme of Veterans! NSANYS loves seeing nursing students like you participating in amazing community health work!

Stony Brook University
In honor of Veterans Awareness Month, and in honor of the 57,849 veterans that remain homeless on a single given night, Stony Brook’s School of Nursing orchestrated an overnight experience called Tent City, which recreated one night that homeless veterans have to endure every night.  On Thursday, November 9, through Friday, November 10, over 100 nursing students gathered together and stayed overnight with blankets and tents on Stony Brook’s campus to support all of the veterans who have selflessly protected us, our families, and our country. The School of Nursing helped create an eye opening experience to help bring awareness and assistance to all of our veterans in our community, which will continue for the years to come at Stony Brook University.  

SUNY Plattsburgh
The SUNY Plattsburgh Student Nurses' Association held a Veterans Drive for two weeks to collect donations of various items to be shipped to our soldiers overseas.

Molloy College
On November 21st, 2017, the Molloy Nursing Student Association organized a table for students to make holiday cards and thank you cards to our veterans! Markers, vibrant colored paper, and stickers were supplied to students to ensure beautifully made cards for our brave veterans. Approximately 100 personalized holiday and thank you cards were made and were dropped off at the a local Veterans Affair Hospital in Northport, NY. 

October 2018: Out of the Darkness Walk
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the leader in the fight against suicide. ASFP fund research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. The Out of the Darkness walks are proof that together we can make big changes in the world.

Community Health Director, Helen Pham, with nursing students from Molloy College enjoyed a stunningly beautiful day walking to support suicide prevention at the Long Island Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention walk at Jones Beach. Molloy Nursing Student Association (MNSA) raised and donated $400 for the suicide prevention.

October 2018: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks are the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting communities with a shared determination to help free the world from the pain and suffering of breast cancer. Passionate walk participants raise critical funds that enable the American Cancer Society to fund innovative research; provide free, information and support to anyone touched by breast cancer; and help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable.

Our Secretary, Kezia Varughese, and nursing students from Mercy College at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Manhattanville raised $247!

September 2018: Clothing Drive at ANA-NY/COSL in Albany, NY

At our 2nd Annual COSL Meeting, held in conjunction with ANA-NY's Annual Meeting, ANA and NSANYS members collectively donated 230 business clothing items to a local women's boutique, Equinox Great Finds. Great Finds is a vocational training center for individuals who want to enter or re-enter the workforce! Items donated include: tops, blouses, pants, skirts, suits, purses, heels, and more!
